Asheville Citizen Times: River Arts District Named No. 1 Arts District in the United States

Asheville’s River Arts District has been voted the No. 1 Arts District in the United States in USA TODAY’s 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards.

The national recognition highlights one of the country’s most vibrant communities of working artists and underscores the district’s remarkable recovery following Tropical Storm Helene in 2024.

USA TODAY’s 10BEST awards are determined through a public vote among locations nominated by an expert panel.

Located along the French Broad River, Asheville’s River Arts District is home to more than 500 artists working across dozens of studios and galleries, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the creative process firsthand.

According to USA TODAY’s 10BEST description:

“Home to more than 500 artists, the River Arts District in Asheville invites you to immerse yourself in the local art scene. Try a glassblowing class at the North Carolina Glass Center, take a bike tour through the district, or visit the many galleries in the area.”

The recognition comes after a difficult period for the district. In September 2024, Tropical Storm Helene caused severe flooding that damaged studios and businesses throughout the area. Since then, hundreds of artists have returned and studios have reopened across the district.

Today, the River Arts District continues to rebuild while welcoming visitors back to experience one of the most dynamic creative communities in the country.
