More than a year after Tropical Storm Helene caused widespread damage across Asheville’s River Arts District, the district has been named a finalist for USA TODAY’s 10BEST “Best Arts District in the Nation.”
The national recognition highlights the resilience and continued recovery of one of the country’s most concentrated communities of working artists.
USA TODAY’s 10BEST Readers’ Choice awards are determined through a public vote following nominations from an expert panel.
Jeffrey Burroughs, president of River Arts District Artists, said the nomination reflects the strength of Asheville’s creative community.
“This nomination is an opportunity to spotlight the resilience, creativity, and collective spirit of the artists and makers who power the River Arts District. A win would help amplify the RAD’s recovery story and remind the country why Asheville’s creative community matters.”
Following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in September 2024, hundreds of artists and businesses have gradually reopened across the district. Today, more than 500 artists have returned to studios, galleries, and collectives throughout the River Arts District.
Visitors to the district can once again explore working artist studios, public art installations, galleries, workshops, and live music venues along the French Broad River.
Public voting for the USA TODAY 10BEST “Best Arts District in the Nation” award remained open through February 16.
