Arts District, Decades in the Making, in Ruins After Helene

The River Arts District of Asheville, long considered one of the city’s defining cultural hubs, suffered catastrophic damage during Hurricane Helene. More than 300 artists had been working across studios in converted industrial buildings along the French Broad River.

Jeffrey Burroughs, president of River Arts District Artists, described the district as uniquely artist-driven.

“There is nothing like the River Arts District in the United States and maybe even the world,” Burroughs said.
